A Contemporary Zealand rugby commentator has apologised after mimicking a Jap participant’s accent following a Wise Rugby Aotearoa sport.
Speaking after the Otago Highlanders’ 33-12 victory over Canterbury Crusaders, Joe Wheeler highlighted the performance of Highlanders and Japan flanker Kazuki Himeno.
He adopted a faux Jap accent, with social media users labelling him “immature”, “racist” and “disgusting”.
He later admitted he had “stuffed up”.
“I’ve spoken with [Himeno] and apologised to him and the Highlanders and our Sky crew,” Wheeler said on Twitter.
“I fully catch right here’s now not the identical old expected of the sideline body of workers. I’ve purchased some work to attain clearly, nonetheless I am fully committed to doing higher.”
Himeno said on Twitter he accredited Wheeler’s apology.
Wheeler’s actions were condemned by Sky Contemporary Zealand chief govt Sophie Moloney, who said the community “will defend striving to reflect and appreciate all americans in our neighborhood”.
Wheeler is a feeble Highlanders ahead who also played for Suntory Sungoliath in the Jap High League until 2020.
